Inspiration

OranjekanaalThe continuing trend in the development of a permanent location for art and nature in Drenthe, in particular in the surroundings of Schoonoord, is – in addition to a connection between nature and visual art – the purpose to use the interesting cultural history of the area as a source of inspiration for the artists. In 2005 it was the legend of Ellert and Brammert. In 2006 we have chosen for the turbulent history of the 150-year-old Oranjekanaal. The theme also fits in perfectly with the great many activities that this year are organized round the Oranjekanaal under the slogan ‘Oranjekanaal, art canal of Drenthe’. At first sight the history of the canal does not seem to appeal to foreign artists as an old legend, but the large number of more than 100 entries from a large number of countries has belied this assumption. Therefore the choice was difficult. After a first and a second selection ten artists were left and on 7 June the work could begin.

The result may be seen. Ten works of art in a route about four kilometres long, of course including the Oranjekanaal. In the still water of this canal two works have been placed. One work is part of the water surface, the other work floats on the water. Two examples showing the differences in approach of the artists. This year the art and nature walk ‘Still Water’ leads through dark pine forest, open spaces, parts reminding of avenues, the verge of the canal and along winding paths. For 2007 we have chosen for a theme that links up with the fast afforestation of Drenthe. Next year we hope to meet you again, when the art and nature walk ‘Green Revolution’ is organized.

Have a nice walk,
